Adam Roberts Biobite

Today’s Happy Birthday shout out goes to Adam Roberts, born June 30, 1965.

Adam Charles Roberts is a British science fiction and fantasy novelist. In 2018 he was elected vice-president of the H. G. Wells Society.

Roberts has a degree in English from the University of Aberdeen and a Ph.D. from Cambridge University on Robert Browning and the Classics. He teaches English literature and creative writing at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Adam Roberts has been nominated three times for the Arthur C. Clarke Award: in 2001 for his debut novel, Salt, in 2007 for Gradisil and in 2010 for Yellow Blue Tibia.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Biobite

Today’s Happy Birthday shout out goes to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, born June 29, 1900.

Antoine Marie Jean-Baptiste Roger, Vicomte de Saint-Exupéry, known simply as Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, was a French writer, poet, journalist and aviator. He received several prestigious literary awards for his novella The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince) and for his lyrical aviation writings, including Wind, Sand and Stars and Night Flight (Vol de nuit). His works have been translated into many languages.

Aimee Bender Biobite

Today’s Happy Birthday shout out goes to Aimee Bender, born June 28, 1969.

Aimee Bender is an American novelist and short story writer, known for her surreal stories and characters. She is a 2011 recipient of the Alex Awards.

Born to a Jewish family, Bender received her undergraduate degree from the University of California at San Diego, and a Master of Fine Arts from the creative writing MFA program at University of California at Irvine. While at UCI she studied with Judith Grossman and Geoffrey Wolff. She received ArtsBridge scholarships and worked with mentor Keith Fowler to create writing programs for K-12 students in Orange County, California. She currently teaches creative writing at the University of Southern California where she served as Director of the USC PhD in Creative Writing & Literature from 2012 to 2015.

Alice McDermott Biobite

Today’s Happy Birthday shout out goes to Alice McDermott, born June 27, 1953.

Alice McDermott is an American writer and university professor. For her 1998 novel Charming Billy she won an American Book Award and the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction. She was shortlisted for the PEN/Faulkner award for fiction.

McDermott is Johns Hopkins University’s Richard A. Macksey Professor of the Humanities.

Edith Pearlman Biobite

Today’s Happy Birthday shout out goes to Edith Pearlman, born June 26, 1936.

Edith Ann Pearlman was an American short story writer.

Pearlman was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where she grew up in a middle-class Jewish neighborhood, the daughter of Edna (Rosen) and Herman Paul Grossman, an ophthalmologist. Her father was born in Ukraine, and her maternal grandparents emigrated from Poland.[2] She graduated from Radcliffe College. She has worked in a computer firm and a soup kitchen and has served in the Town Meeting of Brookline, Massachusetts.

Eric Carle Biobite

Today’s Happy Birthday shout out goes to Eric Carle, born June 25, 1929.

Eric Carle was an American author, designer and illustrator of children’s books. His picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first published in 1969, has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies. Carle’s career as an illustrator and children’s book author accelerated after he collaborated on Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Carle illustrated more than 70 books, most of which he also wrote, and more than 145 million copies of his books have been sold around the world.

Ambrose Bierce Biobite

Today’s Happy Birthday shout out goes to Ambrose Bierce, born June 24, 1842.

Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce  was an American short story writer, journalist, poet, and American Civil War veteran. His book The Devil’s Dictionary was named one of “The 100 Greatest Masterpieces of American Literature” by the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration. His story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” has been described as “one of the most famous and frequently anthologized stories in American literature”, and his book Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (also published as In the Midst of Life) was named by the Grolier Club one of the 100 most influential American books printed before 1900.

Anna Akhmatova Biobite

Today’s Happy Birthday shout out goes to Anna Akhmatova, born June 23, 1889.

Anna Andreyevna Gorenko, better known by the pen name Anna Akhmatova, was a Russian poet, one of the most significant of the 20th century. She reappeared as a voice of Russian poetry during World War II. She was shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in 1965 and received the second-most (three) nominations for the award the following year.

Dan Brown Biobite

Today’s Happy Birthday shout out goes to Dan Brown, born June 22, 1964.

Daniel Gerhard Brown is an American author best known for his thriller novels, including the Robert Langdon novels Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol, Inferno, and Origin. His novels are treasure hunts that usually take place over a period of 24 hours.[3] They feature recurring themes of cryptography, art, and conspiracy theories. His books have been translated into 57 languages and, as of 2012, have sold over 200 million copies. Three of them, Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, and Inferno, have been adapted into films, while one of them, The Lost Symbol, was adapted into a television show.

Today’s Happy Birthday shout out goes to Françoise Sagan, born June 21, 1935.

Françoise Sagan was a French playwright, novelist, and screenwriter. Sagan was known for works with strong romantic themes involving wealthy and disillusioned bourgeois characters. Her best-known novel was her first, Bonjour Tristesse, which was written when she was a teenager.
