Quin-Quotes

Today’s Quin-Quote comes from the late, great Alan Rickman. His stirring words are, “The more we’re governed by idiots and have no control over our destinies, the more we need to tell stories to each other about who we are, why we are, where we come from, and what might be possible.” Stories are necessary for more than recreation, they’re necessary for our sanity as a species. Listen to people’s stories, and tell your own! You’ll do the world a huge favor!

Fourth Friday Writer’s Roundup

08/24/2024 – Greetings one and all from Curious Penman! Happy Hour Café and Spilled In VA were held on Friday, August 23, 2024 at Jirani Coffeehouse at 9425 West St in Manassas VA at 4 pm and 6 pm respectively, and it went gangbusters!

Happy Hour Café

Walt Wolfrham hosts Happy Hour Café, a discussion group for aspiring writers to meet and discuss work, accompanied by exercises to encourage creativity (Bring pen and paper). This month’s prompt was a book cover from a pulp series featuring the Spider.

Spilled Ink VA

Spilled Ink VA is an open mic venue for new and established writers to road test new material in front of a built-in audience. Curious Penman and the host of Happy Hour Café were among those in attendance. Much poetry was heard and enjoyed, with a couple of touching memoirs thrown in. Among the themes of these pieces were family secrets, growing up around celebrities, growing up female, and LGBTQ identity. Curious Penman read excerpts from an upcoming book in the Knight Shade series to be published later this year.

The next Happy Hour Café will be held at Jirani Coffeehouse on Friday, September 27, 2024 at 4 pm, and Spilled Ink VA will follow at 6 pm.

Catch y’all on the flipside!

Quin-Quotes

Today’s Quin-Quote comes from Isaac Asimov, author of “I, Robot.” His best saying is “Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today – but the core of science fiction, its essence has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all.” In other words, listen to and understand what’s in those science fiction stories, because they know what’s coming if we don’t!
